mpathy Machine was a research project presented at the V&A, exploring how participatory opera in virtual reality could address conflict. Led by opera director Tim Hopkins and composer Robert Thomas, the project envisioned individuals with opposing viewpoints collaborating in a VR environment to create an opera together, aiming to foster understanding through shared creative experience.
I worked as a software programmer on Empathy Machine, assisting in the development of the real-time audio engine in Pure Data and designing the interaction system in Unity 3D. My contributions included implementing the custom granular synthesizer built by Robert Thomas, creating a drawing shader system, and linking both systems via OSC for use with the HTC Vive VR headset—allowing users to collaboratively shape music and visuals in real time within a shared virtual space.
